How did you learn to be polite as a child?

Candidato

Well, I guess that most of the things that we've learned as a child is through copying people's behavior. So having a good role model at home who taught me how to be polite and educated, make me acquire these skills and be a positive citizen to the ones around me.

Examinador

Do you think being polite is very important?

Candidato

Yes, definitely. I believe that being well mannered to the others that you know and also people that are strangers for you is very important to keep the courtesy throughout society. For example, I believe that kindness generates kindness. So if you treat someone with care and education, you get it back.

Examinador

On what occasions should we be polite?

Candidato

I guess that we should be polite in every occasion as possible. For example, if you are in a bus and there are no seats available for an old lady, it would be nice to corporate to her well being and offer your seat to her. In the way you show kindness and you just make her day more pleasant.

Examinador

What did you do to show your politeness as a child?

Candidato

One of my actions to show kindness when I was a child was sharing toys with my friends at school. I guess that being polite and well mannered can be shown through many ways. One of them is giving your toys to the ones that cannot afford it and also say thank you, please putting the other in your shoes.

How did you learn to be polite as a child?

Pontuação: 68.0

Sugestão: A resposta é relevante e apresenta uma ideia clara: aprendeste através do exemplo da família. No entanto, há vários problemas gramaticais e algumas expressões pouco naturais: usa “most things we learn as children are” em vez de “most of the things that we've learned as a child is”, “polite and well-mannered” em vez de “polite and educated”, e “helped me develop these skills” em vez de “make me acquire these skills”. Evita também terminar com uma ideia demasiado geral, como “be a positive citizen”, e concentra-te numa situação ou hábito específico, por exemplo, dizer “please” e “thank you”.

Exemplo: I learned to be polite mainly by copying my parents’ behaviour. They always said “please” and “thank you” and treated other people respectfully. As a result, I developed the same habits and learned that good manners make social interactions much easier.

Do you think being polite is very important?

Pontuação: 75.0

Sugestão: A resposta responde directamente à pergunta e inclui uma explicação e um exemplo, o que cria uma boa estrutura. Para soar mais natural, substitui “to the others” por “towards other people”, “strangers for you” por “strangers”, e “keep the courtesy throughout society” por “maintain a respectful society”. Em inglês, “education” não significa “boa educação” neste contexto; usa “respect” ou “good manners”. Evita repetir “I believe” e termina com uma formulação mais idiomática, como “people are more likely to treat you the same way”.

Exemplo: Yes, definitely. Being polite is important because it helps people communicate respectfully and prevents unnecessary conflicts. For instance, if you treat strangers with kindness and consideration, they are more likely to respond positively, which creates a friendlier society.

On what occasions should we be polite?

Pontuação: 70.0

Sugestão: A resposta apresenta uma posição clara e um exemplo concreto, mas contém erros de escolha vocabular e de gramática. Diz “on every occasion” ou, de forma mais natural, “in almost every situation”, e usa “on a bus”, não “in a bus”. “Corporate” deve ser “contribute” ou, neste caso, é melhor dizer “give up your seat”; “to her well-being” não é adequado à ideia pretendida. Reformula a última frase para “In this way, you show kindness and make her journey more pleasant”.

Exemplo: We should be polite in almost every situation, especially when we interact with elderly people or strangers. For example, if an elderly person is standing on a crowded bus, I would offer them my seat. This small gesture shows respect and can make their journey more comfortable.

What did you do to show your politeness as a child?

Pontuação: 62.0

Sugestão: A primeira frase responde adequadamente à pergunta e dá um exemplo pessoal, mas a resposta perde clareza no final e mistura “politeness” com “kindness”. Corrige “shown through many ways” para “shown in many ways”, “the ones that cannot afford it” para “children who could not afford them”, e mantém a estrutura paralela: “saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and putting yourself in other people’s shoes”. Como a pergunta pede o que fizeste, usa sobretudo exemplos concretos do teu comportamento, em vez de generalizações.

Exemplo: When I was a child, I showed politeness by sharing my toys with my classmates and taking turns during games. I also made a habit of saying “please” and “thank you” to my teachers and friends. These small actions helped me show respect and consider other people’s feelings.

Gramática

1: Singular and plural issue

× Well, I guess that most of the things that we've learned as a child is through copying people's behavior.

✓ Well, I guess that most of the things I learned as a child were learned through copying people's behavior.

The noun phrase most of the things is plural, so it requires the plural verb were, not is. Also, I learned is more appropriate because the sentence refers to the student's childhood.

5: Past tense issue

× Well, I guess that most of the things that we've learned as a child is through copying people's behavior.

✓ Well, I guess that most of the things I learned as a child were learned through copying people's behavior.

The phrase as a child refers to a finished period in the past, so the past simple learned is more suitable than the present perfect form we've learned.

5: Past tense issue

× So having a good role model at home who taught me how to be polite and educated, make me acquire these skills and be a positive citizen to the ones around me.

✓ So having a good role model at home who taught me how to be polite and well-mannered made me acquire these skills and become a positive citizen among the people around me.

The sentence describes an influence that happened during the student's childhood, so made should be used instead of make. The verb become also creates a more natural parallel structure with acquire.

11: Incorrect use of prepositions

× I believe that being well mannered to the others that you know and also people that are strangers for you is very important to keep the courtesy throughout society.

✓ I believe that being well-mannered toward the people you know and toward people who are strangers to you is very important for maintaining courtesy throughout society.

The natural preposition is toward when describing one's attitude or behavior toward people. The correct expression is strangers to you, not strangers for you.

11: Incorrect use of prepositions

× I guess that we should be polite in every occasion as possible.

✓ I guess that we should be polite on every possible occasion.

The standard preposition used with occasion is on. The adjective possible should come before occasion in the phrase every possible occasion.

11: Incorrect use of prepositions

× For example, if you are in a bus and there are no seats available for an old lady, it would be nice to corporate to her well being and offer your seat to her.

✓ For example, if you are on a bus and there are no seats available for an old lady, it would be nice to cooperate with her and offer her your seat.

We normally say on a bus, not in a bus. The verb cooperate is followed by with when referring to the person involved. The spelling corporate is a different word and is not the verb needed here.

23: Sentence without a verb

× In the way you show kindness and you just make her day more pleasant.

✓ In this way, you show kindness and make her day more pleasant.

The original sentence begins with the incomplete expression In the way, which does not correctly introduce the idea. In this way forms a complete introductory phrase, followed by the subject and verbs show and make.

11: Incorrect use of prepositions

× I guess that being polite and well mannered can be shown through many ways.

✓ I guess that being polite and well-mannered can be shown in many ways.

The natural preposition used with ways is in, as in in many ways. Through many ways is not the usual expression in this context.

12: Incorrect use of pronouns

× One of them is giving your toys to the ones that cannot afford it and also say thank you, please putting the other in your shoes.

✓ One of them is giving your toys to those who cannot afford them, saying thank you and please, and putting yourself in other people's shoes.

Toys is plural, so it must be referred to with them, not it. The pronoun those is more natural than the ones when referring to people, and who is the appropriate relative pronoun for people.

8: Verb + -ing form

× One of them is giving your toys to the ones that cannot afford it and also say thank you, please putting the other in your shoes.

✓ One of them is giving your toys to those who cannot afford them, saying thank you and please, and putting yourself in other people's shoes.

The items in this series should have parallel grammatical forms. Since the first item is giving, the following actions should also use the -ing form: saying and putting.

15: Incorrect reflexive pronoun use

× One of them is giving your toys to the ones that cannot afford it and also say thank you, please putting the other in your shoes.

✓ One of them is giving your toys to those who cannot afford them, saying thank you and please, and putting yourself in other people's shoes.

The expression is put yourself in someone else's shoes, because the subject performs the action on themselves. The phrase putting the other in your shoes has a different meaning and does not express empathy correctly.
