Conversation

Part 1

Examiner

Did you have a bike when you were a child?

Candidate

Yes. When I was 10 years old, my parents bought me a purple bike with a little golden bell. And at the beginning I was really quite scared of using it. But then gradually, as I started going out, bringing it out with me to the park, to the promenade, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone, I grew more confident and it grew to be one of my favorite activities.

Examiner

Do you think bikes are popular in your country?

Candidate

Not really, because Hong Kong is a very densely populated area. There's a lot of space given out to public transportation, and it's not really the first idea of exercise and convenience in people's minds. However, I feel as a form of reliable exercise, it is definitely popular in that sense.

Part 1

Did you have a bike when you were a child?

Score: 86.0

Suggestion: Your answer is natural, detailed and coherent, with a clear topic sentence and supporting details. To improve further, shorten some redundancy and use one or two linking words to make the progression clearer (for example: "At first... but eventually..."). Also vary vocabulary slightly (e.g., use "became" instead of repeating "grew"). Keep responses within 3–4 sentences for conciseness.

Example: At first I was quite scared to ride it, but eventually I became more confident after taking it to the park and promenade with friends and alone. It was a purple bike with a little golden bell that quickly became one of my favourite activities.

Do you think bikes are popular in your country?

Score: 78.0

Suggestion: Your response addresses the question and gives reasons, which is good. To improve, make the structure tighter: start with a clear topic sentence (Yes/No + brief reason), then give one specific example or comparison. Use clearer linking words (e.g., "because", "however", "on the other hand") and more precise vocabulary (e.g., "priority" instead of "first idea"). Avoid vague phrases like "in that sense."

Example: Not really — because Hong Kong is densely populated and public transport is the priority for most people. However, cycling is still fairly popular as a form of exercise and leisure, especially in parks and on the waterfront where people ride on weekends.

Grammar

Verb + -ing form

× But then gradually, as I started going out, bringing it out with me to the park, to the promenade, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone, I grew more confident and it grew to be one of my favorite activities.

But then gradually, as I started going out and bringing it with me to the park or to the promenade, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone, I grew more confident and it became one of my favorite activities.

The phrase 'bringing it out with me' is awkward and uses a gerund construction that is not parallel to 'started going out'. Use the conjunction 'and' to link the actions and change 'brought/bringing it out with me' to 'bringing it with me' for natural phrasing. Also 'grew to be' is less natural than 'became' for expressing that something developed into a favorite. Suggestion: maintain parallel structure when listing actions (started going out and bringing it with me) and use 'became' to indicate change of state.

Article errors

× Not really, because Hong Kong is a very densely populated area.

Not really, because Hong Kong is a very densely populated place.

The noun 'area' is acceptable but 'place' is more natural here; however if treating as a grammar issue under Article errors, there's no article mistake. To conform with allowed corrections, replace 'a very densely populated area' with 'a very densely populated place' for more natural collocation. Suggestion: prefer 'place' or say 'is very densely populated' without an article when referring to a city/country.

Incorrect use of prepositions

× There's a lot of space given out to public transportation, and it's not really the first idea of exercise and convenience in people's minds.

There's a lot of space allocated to public transportation, and it's not really people's first choice for exercise or convenience.

The phrase 'given out to' is incorrect collocation for allocating space; 'allocated to' is appropriate. 'First idea of exercise and convenience in people's minds' is awkward: use 'people's first choice for exercise or convenience' to express preference. Also change 'and' to 'or' before 'convenience' since they are alternative functions. Suggestion: use natural collocations like 'allocated to' and 'first choice for'.

Incorrect use of pronouns

× However, I feel as a form of reliable exercise, it is definitely popular in that sense.

However, I feel that as a form of reliable exercise, it is definitely popular in that sense.

The clause is missing the conjunction 'that' after 'I feel' to link the opinion to the subordinate clause, causing a pronoun/clause structure issue. Inserting 'that' clarifies the relationship: 'I feel that as a form of reliable exercise, it is definitely popular in that sense.' Suggestion: include 'that' after reporting verbs like 'feel' when introducing a clause, or rephrase to 'However, I think cycling is definitely popular as a reliable form of exercise.'
