Part 1

Examiner

How did you learn to be polite as a child?

Candidate

Actually, my parents always taught me to be polite to everybody. So yeah, they set an example for me as they would always be polite to everyone around them. Even when other people are being rude towards them, they would answer politely and they were my role models growing growing up. So yeah, I would say my parents caught me to be polite.

Examiner

Do you think being polite is very important?

Candidate

Yes, I do think being polite is very important. As in my experience, whenever we are being polite towards towards someone, they would be polite with us too. Like if we would be rude towards anybody, they will be rude towards us. So yeah, I think we should be polite everybody.

Examiner

On what occasions should we be polite?

Candidate

We should especially be polite when we are angry as anger makes us say things that we do not mean and it could hurt the person in front of us. So during an argument we should try and be polite as in my experience being polite always helps us find a common ground and solve the argument rather than being rude.

Examiner

What did you do to show your politeness as a child?

Candidate

Aside, I would always speak politely towards the elderly, towards my parents and also my peers. And especially during arguments, I would not say harsh or rude things to anybody. I would be polite with them and that helped me solve the arguments or whatever fight I was having.

Part 1

How did you learn to be polite as a child?

Score: 72.0

Suggestion: Be careful of repetition and minor grammar errors. Start with a clear topic sentence, avoid repeating words (e.g., “polite” several times), correct verb choices (use “taught” and “raised” appropriately), and eliminate filler words like “so yeah.” Use one or two specific brief examples to support your point.

Example: My parents taught me to be polite from a young age. For example, whenever a neighbor was rude, my parents responded calmly and respectfully, and I learned to copy their behaviour. As a result, I tried to treat everyone with courtesy growing up.

Do you think being polite is very important?

Score: 68.0

Suggestion: Avoid repetition and improve sentence variety and grammar. Use linking words to show cause and effect (e.g., “because,” “therefore”), and correct small errors (remove duplicated words, add prepositions). Give a concise reason or short example to strengthen your answer.

Example: Yes, I believe politeness is very important because it usually encourages mutual respect. For instance, when I speak politely to classmates, they are more cooperative, whereas rudeness often causes conflict.

On what occasions should we be polite?

Score: 78.0

Suggestion: Good content and clear reason. Improve coherence by using a clear topic sentence, add a linking phrase, and keep sentences concise. Replace casual phrases like “so” with more formal connectors and vary vocabulary slightly.

Example: We should be polite particularly when we are angry because anger can lead to hurtful comments. During arguments, staying polite helps calm the situation and allows both sides to find common ground and resolve the issue.

What did you do to show your politeness as a child?

Score: 74.0

Suggestion: Remove informal filler words and improve sentence structure. Begin with a direct topic sentence, then give one or two specific examples (actions or phrases you used). Avoid vague phrases like “whatever fight” and use precise language.

Example: As a child, I showed politeness by addressing elders respectfully and using calm language with friends and family. For example, when upset I would pause before speaking and choose gentle words, which often helped resolve conflicts quickly.

Grammar

Incorrect use of prepositions

× they set an example for me as they would always be polite to everyone around them

✓ they set an example for me because they were always polite to everyone around them

Use 'because' to show reason; 'would always be polite' is awkward for a habitual past action — use simple past 'were always polite' or 'always were polite' to describe their regular behavior. Also 'as' can be ambiguous; 'because' is clearer.

Verb in the present participle form

× they were my role models growing growing up

✓ they were my role models growing up

'growing growing up' repeats the verb; remove the duplicate. 'Growing up' is a present participle phrase modifying 'they were my role models' and is correct without repetition.

Verb in the past participle form

× So yeah, I would say my parents caught me to be polite

✓ So yeah, I would say my parents taught me to be polite

'caught me to be polite' is incorrect collocation. The correct verb is 'taught' (past tense of 'teach') to express that parents instructed the speaker. 'Catch someone to be' is ungrammatical.

Incorrect use of prepositions

× As in my experience, whenever we are being polite towards towards someone, they would be polite with us too

✓ In my experience, whenever we are polite to someone, they are polite to us too

'As in my experience' is awkward; use 'In my experience'. Duplicate 'towards towards' must be reduced to one preposition. Use 'polite to someone' and 'are polite to us' for natural collocations. Also use present simple for general truths rather than progressive/modal 'are being'/'would'.

Modal verb usage

× Like if we would be rude towards anybody, they will be rude towards us

✓ If we are rude to anybody, they will be rude to us

Do not use 'would' in the if-clause for a real conditional; use present simple 'are' in the if-clause and 'will' in the result clause. Also prefer 'to' over 'towards' for this context.

Incorrect use of prepositions

× So yeah, I think we should be polite everybody

✓ So yeah, I think we should be polite to everybody

Missing preposition 'to' after 'polite' is incorrect. Use 'polite to somebody'.

Present tense issue

× So during an argument we should try and be polite as in my experience being polite always helps us find a common ground and solve the argument rather than being rude

✓ So during an argument we should try to be polite, because in my experience being polite always helps us find common ground and resolve the argument rather than being rude

Use 'try to be' rather than 'try and be' for more formal correctness. Add a comma and 'because' to connect reasons clearly. 'Common ground' is uncountable here so no article 'a'. Use 'resolve the argument' instead of 'solve the argument' for natural collocation.

Sentence structure errors

× Aside, I would always speak politely towards the elderly, towards my parents and also my peers

✓ I would always speak politely to the elderly, to my parents, and to my peers

'Aside' is unnecessary and unnatural here. Use parallel prepositions 'to' and a consistent list structure with commas. 'Towards' is acceptable but 'to' is more natural with 'speak politely'.

Incorrect use of adjectives or adverbs

× And especially during arguments, I would not say harsh or rude things to anybody

✓ Especially during arguments, I would not say harsh or rude things to anybody

Beginning a sentence with 'And' is informal; remove it for clearer written style. The rest of the sentence is correct; no change to adjectives 'harsh' and 'rude' is necessary.

Verb in the past participle form

× I would be polite with them and that helped me solve the arguments or whatever fight I was having

✓ I would be polite with them, and that helped me resolve the arguments or whatever fight I was having

Use 'resolve' rather than 'solve' with 'arguments' for natural collocation. Add a comma before 'and' to join clauses. The rest is acceptable; keep past tense 'helped' matching 'was having'.
