Conversation

Part 1

Examiner

What's the weather like where you live?

Candidate

I was born in the Philippines and moved to Japan when I was five years old. In the Philippines, the weather is mostly hot and humid with only two main seasons, summer and dry season. However, in Japan there are 4 distinct seasons and where I live now, the weather changes a lot. It can be sunny and warm in spring, but cold and snowy in the winter.

Examiner

Do you prefer cold or hot weather?

Candidate

I definitely prefer hot weather. In the cold season you can't do much with the cold weather, you just have to cover up and layer your clothing. But in the summer you can bring a handy fan with you and you can also feel the breeze, which makes you feel the summer weather too.

Examiner

Do you prefer dry or wet weather?

Candidate

If I had to choose from those two weathers, I would definitely prefer dry weather because my skin is really strong for dry weather so it wouldn't harm me so much. But the wet weather, my hair blows up when it's raining because of the humid kind of moisture weather, so I would prefer the dry weather.

Examiner

Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast? When and how often?

Candidate

I often check the weather forecast before going to bed, so then I can decide my clothing for the next day and I can check whether I need an umbrella or not. And the weather just changes my mood as well, so I need to check if it's sunny so then I can be happy.

Examiner

What do you think are the effects of climate change in recent years?

Candidate

Especially this summer has got me thinking that climate change is really affecting in a bad way to the earth. This summer is extremely hot and I haven't experienced this hotness throughout my whole life, so I think climate change has been affecting in a bad way.

Examiner

Would you like to visit other cities that have different climates from where you live?

Candidate

Sometimes when it's extremely hot, I would wanna go someplace that is extremely cold, but then at the same time, when it's cold, I would wanna visit in a place that is warm and hot. But I mean, Japan has all Four Seasons, so I think I can bear with it.

Grammar

Singular and plural issue

× In the Philippines, the weather is mostly hot and humid with only two main seasons, summer and dry season.

In the Philippines, the weather is mostly hot and humid with only two main seasons, summer and the dry season.

The phrase 'dry season' needs the definite article 'the' to specify the particular season, making it 'the dry season'. This is a common usage with season names when specifying particular seasons.

Singular and plural issue

× However, in Japan there are 4 distinct seasons and where I live now, the weather changes a lot.

However, in Japan there are 4 distinct seasons, and where I live now, the weather changes a lot.

A comma is needed before the conjunction 'and' to separate two independent clauses, improving sentence clarity and structure.

Singular and plural issue

× In the cold season you can't do much with the cold weather, you just have to cover up and layer your clothing.

In the cold season, you can't do much with the cold weather; you just have to cover up and layer your clothing.

A semicolon or period is needed to separate two independent clauses instead of a comma, which causes a comma splice error.

Singular and plural issue

× If I had to choose from those two weathers, I would definitely prefer dry weather because my skin is really strong for dry weather so it wouldn't harm me so much.

If I had to choose from those two types of weather, I would definitely prefer dry weather because my skin is really strong for dry weather so it wouldn't harm me so much.

The word 'weathers' is incorrect because 'weather' is an uncountable noun. Use 'types of weather' instead to express different kinds of weather.

Incorrect use of prepositions

× Sometimes when it's extremely hot, I would wanna go someplace that is extremely cold, but then at the same time, when it's cold, I would wanna visit in a place that is warm and hot.

Sometimes when it's extremely hot, I would wanna go someplace that is extremely cold, but then at the same time, when it's cold, I would wanna visit a place that is warm and hot.

The preposition 'in' is unnecessary before 'a place' in this context. The correct phrase is 'visit a place' without 'in'.
