Band 7 Example

Question: Why do individuals from the same family have different personalities?

Idea 1

Genetic Variation
Model Answer
I think being different in a family is natural. If everyone in a family was the same, they might argue more because they want the same things. Having different likes helps avoid fights. So, it seems like it's part of our nature. But, our experiences also shape our personality. For example, if a brother goes through something tough that his sister doesn't, it will affect his personality.
It's probably genetic to be honest. I mean, if all the members in a family had the same personality, they would all want the same things and probably end up falling out with each other. If we all have different preferences and want different things, then it avoids conflicts, so, in this respect, it's innate. But our personality is also affected by the life experiences we have. If one brother has a traumatic experience that his sister doesn't have, then this will have an effect on his personality and possibly change it.
Grammar Analysis
The use of adverbs: The adverb "probably" in "It's probably genetic" is used to express speculation, showing that candidates are able to use adverbs to express uncertainty. The application of conditional sentences: "If all the members in a family had the same personality..." This conditional sentence demonstrates the possible outcomes of a hypothetical situation, indicating the candidate's ability to use complex conditional sentence structures. Expression of cause and effect: "If we all have different preferences... then it avoids conflicts" Here, the cause and effect structure clearly shows the positive consequences of having different preferences, demonstrating the candidate's ability to express cause and effect relationships.

Idea 2

Personal Experiences
Model Answer
Individuals in the same family can have different personalities because of their unique experiences. For instance, different friendships and hobbies contribute to each person's individuality. Also, the independent experiences they go through, like traveling alone or facing personal challenges, play a big part in shaping their personality.
The divergence in personalities among family members can often be attributed to distinct personal experiences. Unique friendships, varied interests, and independent life events significantly contribute to the development of an individual's character. These experiences, separate from familial influences, are pivotal in crafting distinct personalities within the same family.

Idea 3

Psychological Development
Model Answer
Different personalities within the same family can stem from psychological development factors. For example, varied parenting styles can influence each child in unique ways. Also, the birth order theory suggests that a person's position in the family can impact their personality, like how firstborns often have different traits compared to younger siblings.
The varying personalities within a family can often be explained through psychological development theories. Diverse parenting approaches have a significant impact on shaping each child's character differently. Moreover, the concept of birth order plays a role, as it theorizes that an individual's position within the family hierarchy influences their personality traits, with noticeable differences between older and younger siblings.
