Band 7 Example
Topic: Describe a plan that you had to change recently
Example
A change of travel plans When this happened I'm going to talk about a plan I had to change just last month. I had originally planned to visit my friend in another city for the weekend. We had been planning this trip for weeks and I was really looking forward to it. What made you change the plan Unfortunately, just a day before I was supposed to leave, I received a call from my friend saying that she had fallen ill. She had caught a nasty cold and was feeling under the weather. It was clear that she wouldn't be able to host me or enjoy the weekend as we had planned. Given the circumstances, I had no choice but to change my plans. What the new plan was Instead of traveling, I decided to stay in my city and make the most of the weekend. I called up a few local friends and we decided to have a small get-together at my place. We cooked dinner together, watched some movies, and just relaxed. It was a very different plan from what I had originally intended, but it turned out to be quite enjoyable. And how you felt about the change Initially, I was quite disappointed because I had been looking forward to the trip for a long time. However, as the weekend unfolded, I realized that the change in plans was not so bad after all. It gave me a chance to reconnect with my local friends and enjoy some quality time with them. In the end, I felt grateful for the flexibility and the opportunity to make the best out of an unexpected situation. It taught me that sometimes, even when things don't go as planned, they can still turn out well.
Grammar Analysis
The answer demonstrates a good command of various tenses, which helps to clearly convey the sequence of events. For example, "I had originally planned" uses the past perfect to indicate an action completed before another past action. The use of complex sentences enhances the narrative, such as "Unfortunately, just a day before I was supposed to leave, I received a call from my friend saying that she had fallen ill." This sentence effectively combines multiple ideas and actions. The answer also uses conditional structures to express hypothetical situations, as seen in "It taught me that sometimes, even when things don't go as planned, they can still turn out well."
