Band 7 Example

Question: What equipment do you find difficult to use?

Idea 1

Technical Devices
Model Answer
I'm pretty good with technology, but programming software is hard for me to understand. I've taken some online courses as introductions, and I've tried hard to become functional at it. However, I can't seem to make it work. Every time I think I've made progress, whatever I program just doesn't work, and I don't know how to fix it.
I’m quite tech-savvy but I can’t get my head round programming software. I’ve done a couple of online courses as introductions to it and have tried and tried to get to a point where I’m functional, but I just don’t seem to be able to get there. Every time I think I’ve got somewhere, whatever I’m programming just doesn’t work and I don’t know how to fix it.
Grammar Analysis
Present perfect tense: "I’ve done a couple of online courses" uses the present perfect tense to express the impact of past experiences on the current situation, demonstrating a clear understanding of time relationships. Modal verb: "I just don’t seem to be able to get there" uses the modal verb "seem" to express uncertainty, reflecting the complexity of the sentence and the natural fluency of spoken language. Conditional adverbial clause: "Every time I think I’ve got somewhere" uses a conditional adverbial clause to express the situation that occurs every time something happens, increasing the complexity and coherence of the sentence.

Idea 2

Household Appliances
Model Answer
For me, it's the washing machine. It's really confusing. It has lots of modes for different types of clothes and how dirty they are, but I always use the same one. I looked at the instructions, but they didn't help much. I'm not sure if I should use a high or low temperature.
Quite simply, the washing machine. It baffles me. It has multiple modes for different fabrics and times, and also settings for how dirty the clothes are, but I find myself using the same setting every single time. I tried reading the instructions that came with it but it didn’t make things any clearer and I have no idea whether to use a high temperature or low one.
Grammar Analysis
Double object: "I find myself using the same setting every single time." This sentence uses a double object structure (find + oneself + v-ing), demonstrating a higher level of grammatical skill. Conditional sentence: "I have no idea whether to use a high temperature or low one." This is a conditional sentence type, showing the complexity and variability in the answer, adding richness to the spoken language.
