Speaking Part 3: Transport

In this study note, we will focus on effective ways to answer questions related to transport in the IELTS Speaking Part 3 section. It is important to note that the examiner will be listening to your answers to determine if you can use appropriate verb tenses. We will also provide examples and explanations to further enhance your understanding.

1. What types of transport are there in your town?

In my town, Manchester, there is a wide range of transportation options available, except for an underground system. People can choose to drive around the city using their own cars or opt for buses, which are quite popular. Additionally, there are free buses that operate between the train stations, providing convenience for commuters. Another mode of transportation in Manchester is the tram system, which is efficient and widely used. Of course, taxis are also readily available for those who prefer that option.

Examples and Details Explanation:

  • "You can drive around the city by car" - Use of the present simple tense to refer to a general and ongoing action that is possible at any time.
  • "There are even free buses" - Present simple tense is used to describe a fact or a situation that is generally true.
  • "Manchester also has a tram system" - Present simple tense is used to indicate a permanent characteristic or feature of the city.

2. How has transport changed since your grandparents were young?

Transportation options have undergone significant changes since the time when my grandparents were young. During their generation, cars, trains, and planes were already available for people to use. Additionally, London had already established its underground system. However, the notable difference lies in the advancements of technology. Transportation systems have evolved and improved over the years. Nevertheless, the modern transport system does not necessarily translate to a better experience. Nowadays, people are traveling more frequently, leading to increased traffic congestion. As a result, individuals are often stuck in traffic for longer durations.

Examples and Details Explanation:

  • "Well, they had cars, trains and planes back then" - Use of the past simple tense to describe actions or situations that occurred in the past and are now completed.
  • "but I suppose the difference is that technology has moved on" - Present perfect tense is used to discuss the effects of past actions that still have relevance or impact in the present.
  • "people travel a lot more, and I’m sure we spend more time stuck in traffic" - Present simple tense is used to express general truths or habitual actions.

3. What types of transport do you think we will use in the future?

Regarding the future of transportation, it is challenging to predict with certainty. However, it is hopeful that we will witness the development of self-driving cars that can significantly reduce accidents and improve road safety. Furthermore, it is likely that air travel will become even more prevalent, possibly reaching a point where owning a personal aircraft becomes a normal occurrence. Conversely, several cities are increasingly investing in the construction of additional bicycle lanes, suggesting a potential decrease in car usage for commuting within towns and cities.

Examples and Details Explanation:

  • "hopefully we’ll have cars that drive themselves and never crash" - Use of future simple tense to express a hope or prediction about a future event or situation.
  • "I think we’ll probably fly more" - Use of future simple tense to express a prediction or opinion about a future event or situation.
  • "so maybe we will use cars less for getting around towns and cities" - Use of future simple tense to express a possibility or likelihood about a future event or situation.
