Speaking Part 3: Free time (past and future)

The following study note provides information and examples for Speaking Part 3 related to free time in the past and the future. It is important to notice the different verb tenses used in the questions as the examiner will evaluate your ability to use appropriate tenses in your answers.

1. Did people have more free time when your grandparents were young?

When my grandparents were young, it is likely that they had less leisure time compared to the present. The absence of gadgets that we now have at our disposal meant that they probably spent more time engaging in simple activities. For instance, unlike today where we can cook meals in a microwave within five minutes, people in the past had to cook everything from scratch.

Example answer:

During my conversations with my grandparents, they often mentioned how they would spend their free time engaging in various activities such as knitting, gardening, or playing traditional board games. They didn't have the luxury of modern technology, which allowed them to dedicate more time to these simple yet enjoyable pastimes.

2. Do you think the hobbies people have will be different in the future?

No, I do not believe that hobbies will undergo significant changes in the future. People will likely continue to participate in games and sports, as these activities are timeless and provide entertainment and relaxation. However, it is worth noting that the advent of the internet might transform the way we allocate our free time. Consequently, an increasing number of individuals might develop online hobbies.

Example answer:

In today's interconnected world, individuals have access to a wide range of hobbies both online and offline. Whether it is engaging in virtual reality gaming or pursuing physical activities such as hiking or painting, people will always seek ways to enjoy their leisure time. The internet, however, is influencing the way we spend our free time, with the popularity of online video streaming platforms, social media, and online gaming increasing rapidly. Therefore, in the future, we might witness a surge in the number of individuals who adopt online hobbies as a way to relax and unwind.
