Speaking Part 2: Something That Made You Angry

In this speaking part 2 task, you will need to describe a situation that made you angry. Make sure to mention the details of the situation, when it happened, and what exactly made you angry. Additionally, explain how you felt during that situation.

Sample Answer

A recent situation that made me quite angry was when I found myself stuck in a long traffic jam while I was on my way to meet some friends.

This incident occurred last Sunday during lunchtime. Since it was a weekend and people usually don't work on Sundays, I had expected the roads to be relatively empty. Consequently, I hadn't allocated much time for the journey, assuming I would reach my destination quickly. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned.

Initially, everything seemed to be going smoothly until I unexpectedly encountered a long line of cars ahead of me. I had no alternative but to join the queue and patiently wait for the reason behind the delay to be resolved. Eventually, I discovered that the cause of the congestion was ongoing roadworks, which added an extra 30 minutes to my journey time.

Usually, being stuck in traffic isn't something that particularly angers me. However, this episode was different since I hadn't foreseen it and I knew that my friends were eagerly waiting for me to join them for lunch. Therefore, I felt a mix of frustration and powerlessness since there was nothing I could do to change the situation. Moreover, the uncertain duration of the delay added to my distress. Finally, as I approached the roadworks and realized I was close to bypassing them, a sense of relief washed over me. Nevertheless, anxieties lingered as I knew I would be at least half an hour late.

Examples and Additional Explanation

To enhance your response, you could consider incorporating more specific examples and providing further explanations. This will help you demonstrate your English proficiency and provide a more detailed and engaging account. For instance:

  • Example 1: When describing the situation, you could mention the location or the specific road you were on, if relevant. This could be something like, "I was driving on the main highway towards the city center when I encountered the frustrating traffic jam."

  • Example 2: While explaining what made you angry, you could further elaborate on the impact it had on your plans or emotions. For instance, "What frustrated me the most was the fact that I had meticulously planned this outing with my friends, and this unexpected delay jeopardized the entire schedule, leaving me feeling exasperated."

  • Explanation 1: When discussing your feelings during the situation, you may want to delve deeper into why you felt frustrated and powerless. You could explain, "The feeling of frustration stemmed from my belief that I had no control over the circumstances. Witnessing the continuous traffic ahead, yet being unable to accelerate or change lanes, contributed to my growing aggravation."

  • Explanation 2: Reflecting on your emotions after discovering the cause of the delay, you can elaborate on the relief and added stress you experienced. For example, "As soon as I saw the roadworks causing the congestion, relief washed over me. However, that relief was quickly overshadowed by the knowledge that I was already half an hour late, and my friends were potentially feeling disappointed or concerned."

By incorporating more examples and providing detailed explanations, you will be able to present a more comprehensive and engaging answer to the speaking task.
