Speaking Part 2: Strategies for Answering

Many students wonder if using a specific formula for speaking part 2 is beneficial. One such formula is:

"I guess I could begin by saying something about (point 1) and I think I would have to choose…

Going on to my next point which is (point 2), I really need to emphasise that (explain point 2)

And now with reference to (point 3), the point I want to make here is that (explain point 3)

And so finally, if I have time, in answer to the question of (point 4), really I should mention that…"

While this formula may seem like a useful tool, I do not recommend using it. As an English speaker and ex-examiner, I find these phrases to be repetitive and annoying. It is evident that these are memorized phrases that do not effectively address the question topic. Expecting the examiner to be impressed by such a technique is unrealistic.

While there are a few advantages to using a formula, such as providing some structure to your answer and boosting your confidence during the test, the disadvantages outweigh these benefits:

  1. Your focus becomes fixated on the memorized phrases rather than answering the question with relevant ideas.
  2. The examiner may perceive the use of memorized phrases as a sign that you are unable to produce spontaneous and fluent language, indicating a lower level of English proficiency.

Therefore, it is best to avoid relying on a formula and instead, concentrate on getting straight to the point and answering the question directly. It is important to provide a clear and coherent response without unnecessary repetition or rigid structure.

To further improve your performance in speaking part 2, consider the following strategies:

  1. Plan your response: Take a few seconds to brainstorm ideas related to the topic before you start speaking. This will help you structure your answer naturally and focus on relevant points.
  2. Use natural language: Instead of relying on memorized phrases, aim to use a range of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and expressions. This demonstrates your ability to communicate effectively in English.
  3. Provide examples and details: Support your points with examples and specific details to add depth and credibility to your response.
  4. Maintain fluency and coherence: Practice speaking fluently and coherently by linking your ideas logically and smoothly. Use transitional phrases such as "Furthermore," "Moreover," or "In addition" to connect your thoughts and create a cohesive flow of information.

By following these strategies and avoiding the use of formulaic phrases, you can present a more natural and engaging response in speaking part 2.
