Speaking Part 1: Learning languages

In last week’s speaking lesson, we discussed some common mistakes that students made when answering questions related to learning languages. In this session, we will provide model answers and further explore this topic.

1. Do you like learning languages?

Certainly! Although learning languages can be challenging, I deeply enjoy the process. It fascinates me to be able to comprehend and communicate with people from different cultures and countries through languages.

2. How did you learn the languages that you know?

In terms of foreign languages, I studied French and German during my high school years. However, I believe that my true proficiency in French only developed in my twenties when I lived and worked in Paris for a year. Regarding German, I am still at a beginner level.

3. Why do people learn more than one language?

There are various reasons why individuals might choose to learn multiple languages. Some people require foreign languages for professional purposes, such as jobs that involve international communication. Others learn them in order to travel abroad and effectively interact with locals. Furthermore, learning multiple languages can be seen as a personal accomplishment, as it demonstrates the mastery of a complex skill.

4. Do you think that all children should learn foreign languages at school?

In my opinion, it is highly beneficial for children to learn foreign languages at school. Exposure to another language during their formative years allows them to develop an understanding of different countries and cultures worldwide, fostering a sense of global awareness and inclusivity. Therefore, I believe it should be encouraged.

Note: Remember to use accurate grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structures when discussing these topics during the IELTS speaking test. Practice speaking fluently and coherently, providing well-developed answers to demonstrate your language ability.
