IELTS Speaking: Handling Unfamiliar Topics

Many candidates often wonder what to do in case they encounter a question or topic during the IELTS speaking test that they have not specifically practiced or prepared for. In such situations, here are some recommendations to handle the unfamiliar questions or topics effectively:

Strange Questions in Part 1

During Part 1 of the speaking test, you may come across unexpected questions like "Do you like flowers?" or "Do you like to buy expensive shoes?". It's quite possible that you might not have prepared for these questions, but worry not! Just provide a direct and natural response, followed by a reason or explanation.

For instance, if you are asked, "Do you like flowers?", you can answer, "Yes, I like flowers because they have a pleasant fragrance, they add vibrancy to any room, and people often appreciate them as gifts."

Strange Topics in Part 2

In Part 2, it is advisable to have prepared ideas for the six main topic areas: describing a person, place, object, event, activity, and a favorite (such as a book, film, or website). It is also helpful to prepare ideas related to your work or studies.

Most part 2 tasks can be adapted to fit your prepared ideas. For example, if you are asked to describe an important letter that you received, you can talk about receiving a letter of acceptance to your university or a job offer.

However, if you struggle to adapt your prepared ideas to the given topic, do not panic. Simply do your best! Decide on a topic to discuss and follow the points mentioned on the task card. It is beneficial to talk about something real and provide examples while expressing your feelings.

Unexpected Questions in Part 3

In Part 3, my recommendation is to utilize the answer 'structure' even if you are taken aback by the question.

The suggested structure is as follows:

  1. Provide a direct answer.
  2. Elaborate on your response.
  3. Support your points with examples.
  4. If you wish to add more, discuss the opposite viewpoint, alternative options, potential consequences, or future predictions (if applicable).

If you have encountered any perplexing speaking questions that left you stumped, please feel free to share and discuss them in the comments section below.
