Speaking Part 3: Long answer method

Here's a recommended method for providing long and well-structured answers in Part 3 of the IELTS Speaking test:

  1. Start with a direct answer to the question.
  2. Explain your reasoning behind your answer.
  3. Provide a specific example or illustration to support your explanation.
  4. Discuss the alternative or opposite perspective to show your understanding of both sides of the argument.

Let's go through an example of a long answer using this method:

Question:
Do you think it’s better to have clear aims for the future or is it best to take each day as it comes?

Answer:
(Direct answer) Personally, I believe it is crucial to have clear aims and goals for the future, especially with regards to one's education and career. (Explain why) Having well-defined goals enables individuals to plan their actions and make informed decisions on a daily basis, ensuring they take steps towards achieving their long-term objectives. (Example) For instance, if someone aspires to become a doctor, they must carefully select the appropriate subjects in school, strive to obtain excellent examination results, and put in the necessary effort during their university studies. (Opposite) On the other hand, without clear aims, individuals would find it extremely challenging to navigate the path towards a career in medicine or any other profession, as they would lack the necessary direction and focus.

Tip: It is worth noting that many candidates fail to provide a clear structure or direction when answering Part 3 questions. By incorporating this method into your practice, you will distinguish yourself and leave a positive impression on the examiner.
