IELTS Speaking Part 2: Six Main Topics

To effectively prepare for the IELTS speaking test, it is important to have a clear understanding of the six main topic areas that are commonly found in the test. Familiarize yourself with these topics and ensure that you have ideas and examples for each of them.

1. Describe an object: This could be a gift that you have received or something that you frequently use in your daily life. For instance, you could describe a special watch that holds sentimental value or a smartphone that is essential for your work.

2. Describe a person: Choose someone you admire or have a close relationship with, such as a family member, a friend, or a mentor. Provide details about their qualities, achievements, and the impact they have had on your life.

3. Describe an event: Think of a festival, celebration, or party that you have attended or would like to attend. Describe the atmosphere, traditions, and your personal experiences during the event. This could be a cultural festival, a wedding ceremony, or a birthday party.

4. Describe an activity: Discuss a hobby or an activity that interests you. It could be something you already enjoy or something you would like to try in the future. Provide specific details about why you find it appealing and how you engage in this activity.

5. Describe a place: Recount your experience of visiting a particular place or talk about a dream holiday destination. Include vivid descriptions of the sights, sounds, and overall atmosphere of the place. This could be a city, a natural landscape, or a tourist attraction.

6. Describe your favorite thing: This could be your favorite book, film, advertisement, or website. Explain why it holds a special place in your heart and provide specific examples of its impact on you. Discuss the reasons why it stands out compared to other similar things in the same category.

It is important to note that most questions in the IELTS speaking test can be categorized into one or more of these six topic areas. For instance, a question like "Describe a river, lake, or sea" can be linked to topic 5, where you describe a place. You can talk about a holiday by the sea or a city with a river.
