IELTS Speaking: If you don't know (2)
In last week's speaking lesson, we discussed two helpful tips for handling situations when you are unsure of the answer to a question.
To summarize, my advice was to first acknowledge that you don't know the answer, and then proceed to provide a response by making an educated guess or using your imagination.
In order to effectively apply this advice, we can use a specific phrase that can act as a formula. Although I am typically not a proponent of using formulaic expressions, this particular one proves to be quite useful.
Formula phrase:
Well, I don't really know much about... because..., but I suppose...
Let's consider an example question:
Question: What kinds of jobs might stop when the season changes?
Example answer:
Well, I don't really know much about seasonal jobs because everyone works all year round where I live, but I suppose that some jobs related to tourism must come to a halt at the end of the summer holiday period.
Study task: Now, it's your turn to create an answer incorporating this formula phrase for any given topic.
