IELTS Direction Vocabulary : Useful words in IELTS Speaking

Directions and Landmarks

- To Your Left/Right: The direction to the side of you, either the left or the right.

- To the Left/Right of the...: The position being on the left or right side of something.

- Beside: Next to or at the side of something.

- Near: In close proximity to.

- Next to: Immediately adjacent to.

- Nearby: In the near vicinity.

- Close to: In close distance or relationship.

- Far from: At a great distance from.

- On the Opposite Side to: Being on the side that is directly across from something.

- Across (the road) from: On the other side of a road or similar barrier.

- Be Parallel to: To run alongside something with the same direction.

- At the End of...: Located at the final part of something.

- Between A and B: In the intermediate space or time between two points or things.

- On the Corner of A Street and B Street: At the point where two streets meet.

- In the Corner of: Inside the angle formed by the intersection of two edges.

- Branch off: To diverge or extend from a main path or line.

Actions and Routes

- Go Across/Through: To move from one side of something to the other.

- Go East/West...: To move in the horizontal direction to the left or right of the north-south axis.

- Go Along...: To proceed in a particular direction.

- Go Past.../Pass...: To move by or beyond something.

- Go Towards: To head in the direction of a particular place or person.

- Turn Left/Right at the...Crossing: To change direction at a specific point by turning either left or right.

Reference Points

- You Are Here: The starting point for navigation.

- Visitors’ Center: A place where tourists can get information and assistance.

- Reception: The area where people are formally received, especially at the entrance of a building or event.

- Side Entrance: An entrance to a building that is not the main one.

- Emergency Gate: A door for quick exit in case of an emergency.

- Fire Gate: A door designed to contain the spread of fire.

- Lift Lobby: The area outside the elevators in a building.

- Exit: A way out of a building, room, or vehicle.

- Landmark: A naturally conspicuous object or artificially constructed sign used for navigation.

Directional Terms

- Northeast: The direction between north and east.

- Northwest: The direction between north and west.

- Southeast: The direction between south and east.

- Southwest: The direction between south and west.

- Southern: Relating to the south.

- To Your East/West: The location to the right or left of someone when facing north.

- Top: The highest point or part.

- Above: Positioned at a higher level than something else.

- Up: In an upward direction.

- Bottom: The lowest part or point.

- Underneath: Directly below something.

- Down: In a downward direction.

- Back: The rear or the rear part of something.

- Behind: At the back of something.

- In Front of: Ahead of or before something.

- Straight Ahead: Directly in front of someone or something.

- On the Left/Right: Positioned to the side of something.
